Typhoon Co-May, the eighth typhoon of the year, made landfall along the coast of Zhujiajian Island in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang Province on early Wednesday morning. Classified as a tropical storm, the typhoon has already brought strong winds and heavy rainfall to parts of eastern China, according to media reports.
Due to the impact of the typhoon, strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected in parts of East China's Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces.
According to the National Meteorological Center, between 8 am Wednesday and 8 am Thursday, some areas in southeastern Jiangsu, central and northern Shanghai, and northern Zhejiang are expected to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with localized downpours reaching 250 to 320 millimeters.
Additionally, winds of 5 to 7 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts of 8 to 9, are expected in southeastern Jiangsu, northeastern Zhejiang, and Shanghai. Areas near the typhoon's center or along its path may experience gale-force winds of 9 to 10, with gusts reaching 11 to 12.
Authorities in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province have issued an emergency advisory urging residents to avoid going outdoors unless absolutely necessary, according to local authority.
Besides, all 70 water passenger transport routes in Zhoushan have been suspended as a safety precaution, and multiple tourist attractions have been closed, according to media reports.
Emergency response teams remain on high alert as the storm continues to move inland, bringing the risk of further flooding and transportation delays.
The local education authorities in Ningbo, Zhejiang issued a notice on Wednesday that all school-organized summer care programs and extracurricular training classes will be suspended on the day due to the severe impact of the typhoon. In addition, study tours, social practice activities, and summer sports and arts competitions for students will also be canceled.
A total of 71 train services were suspended at Ningbo Railway Station on Wednesday due to the impact of an approaching typhoon, according to information from the railway authorities.
Railway authorities plan to implement temporary suspensions and speed restrictions on several passenger trains on Wednesday on the Hangzhou-Shenzhen High-Speed Railway and on the Xiaoyong Railway.
In Shanghai, the Shanghai Metro has no current plans to suspend operations and will continue running as normal. However, due to the impact of the typhoon, all ferry services within the city have been suspended, local media the Paper reported.
Due to the rainstorm's impact, major transportation hubs are experiencing disruptions. In Shanghai, both Pudong and Hongqiao airports have reported reduced operational capacity, with nearly 30 percent of inbound and outbound flights either delayed or canceled for the day, CCTV News reported.
The Shanghai Disney Resort is currently closely monitoring the weather conditions, and there are no plans at this time to close the resort based on the current weather and forecasts, according to local media reports. The resort will continue to update operational information as needed in response to actual weather developments.
Some outdoor attractions and entertainment offerings may be temporarily suspended or canceled due to the weather conditions, reports said.
